Goals

Our Goals are to help each child progress as far as he or she is capable in developing crucial math, reading and writing skills as well as the many other areas of learning. We especially strive to promote independence, self-discipline, responsibility and a love of learning. We feel that a strong positive self-image is crucial to a child's optimal development. Also, we try to maintain an environment of warmth, trust and mutual respect for each other, for te learning environment and the world. We hope you will let us know your goals and concerns for your child.

Homework

We will be asking students to complete nightly homework assignments. We depend upon parent cooperation to make this aspect of the curriculum successful.

Fourth graders have the following schedule of assignments:  Monday - social studies and writing; Tuesday - science and math; Wednesday - none; Thursday - projects occasionally.

Fifth and Sixth graders have the following schedule of assignments: social studies, math and writing are assigned for Monday; science, math and grammar for Tuesday and math for  Wednesday.  Occasionally students complete a short project assignment Thursday night.

Besides the above assignments, students should try to read 50 (4th grade), 75 (5th) - 100 (6th) pages per week in an appropriate book. Assigned literature is interspersed with books of the student's choosing from various genres for their Passport Reading. Students should spend about one hour per night on homework. Please let us know if your child is spending considerably more or less time on his/her work.

There are certain instances in which a student may be excused from homework:

  • The night of his/her birthday
  • When a student has family or personal obligations
  • When a student is absent because of illness
  • Other circumstances which the parent feels prevents him/her from getting or completing the assignment

Generally, we want students to develop good study habits and skills, as well as gaining a better understanding of the concepts being studied. At the same time, we want to be flexible and honor other obligations and commitments that students may have.

Our approach to homework involves some drill work which reinforces basic skills that students and parents can easily understand. This allows additional time in the classroom for more complex and creative activities. Your first family assignment is to discuss and choose a specific time and space to be set aside for homework. The space should be furnished with essential supplies.

Volunteers

We have been fortunate in the past to have the help of parents in a variety of capacities. These include tutors in creative writing, field trip drivers, computer helpers, typists, material makers, refreshment providers, coaches, referees, etc. We expect that each of you will find some way to help make your child's school experience a little better. Thanks.

Classwork

Class assignments are checked upon completion. Every other weekend the teachers review work for its overall quality and then return it to the student with comments and corrections. Positive comments appear on the cover, while those involving areas of concern appear on the inside. Work is sent home on every other Monday in a portfolio. The folder should be initialed inside and out and returned to the classroom the next day. You may include your own comments on the inside of the folder.

Arrival and Dismissal

Children should not arrive on campus before 8:00 am. They will be considered late if they arrive after 8:30 am. After 8:30 am please take them to the main office for a note to give to a Brown Door staff member. Pick up time is between 2:55 and 3:15 pm. We are unable to accommodate late pickups. Students who are waiting to be picked up will be sent to After School Care. If you need to pick your child up before the 2:55 pm dismissal time, please go into the main office and sign them out.

Food

School rules prohibit candy and soft drinks during school hours. Sending sugared fruit drinks, desserts or any foods containing excessive sugar or highly processed ingredients is discouraged.

Some students enjoy sharing lunch items with their friends. To allow this practice it is necessary to keep all lunches very healthy. We realize that there is a wide range of opinions regarding food and health. We hope that these policies do not offend or inconvenience you.

Also, when you bring something for the entire class, please consider bringing something healthy.
