Backpacking Trip

There is one backpack trip every spring with 4th graders following a slightly different itinerary than 5th and 6th graders. All Brown Door students and teachers will be participating.

The backpack will start off with a one mile hike to the first trail camp upstream from the Nira Campground on Manzana Creek. All students will spend the first night there together and will cook both dinner and breakfast.

The next morning the fifth and sixth graders pack up and head for a campsite further along the trail.  They stay at this site the second night before returning to the original site the third day and night.  They hike out on the fourth day.

The fourth graders stay at the same site for two nights and hike out the morning of the third day.

Location - Manzana Creek

To get to the trail head at Nira Campground take the 101 (north or south) to the 154. Follow the 154up into the Valley. Turn right onto Armstrong Ranch Road (right after crossing the Santa Ynez River). Take the first right onto Happy Canyon Road at 1.3 miles. Follow it for 16 miles to the first right onto Sunset Valley Road. Follow this to the trail head sign and Nira Campground.

Learning Goals

Independence, respect for the natural environment, planning meals, identifying native plants and animals, camp cooking, fire building, wilderness first aid, knots and related back country survival skills, using a compass and navigation with a topographical map, are some of the goals we have for students. We welcome parents who allow their children and the other students to function as independently as possible. These trips have been conducted successfully in the past with only teachers. Adults cook in a separate group and are advised not to sleep in the same tent as their children.

  • The backpack trip is a basic part of the Brown Door program. All students are expected to attend.
  • Respect for the natural environment, flexibility, enthusiasm and a positive attitude are requirements for all participants.
