Head of School Search

Montessori Center School is conducting a search for its next Long-Term Head of School, to begin July 1, 2027. After learning last winter that our former Head of School would not be returning, the Board of Trustees engaged Educators Collaborative to partner in a comprehensive search for our next leader. Karen Kuse has joined MCS as Interim Head of School for the 2026-2027 school year, providing experienced leadership while the search is underway.
The Search began in Spring 2026 with community engagement surveys and meetings. From these, we developed a Leadership Profile reflecting MCS’s strengths, visions, and needs.
Download Leadership Profile PDFOur search firm spent the summer recruiting and vetting a large pool of qualified applicants and will bring a small group of candidates to the Search Committee in the fall. The Search Committee will interview these candidates and perform reference checks, and reduce the pool to a group of semi-finalists who will visit campus for multi-day interviews later this year. Community members, including faculty and staff, families, students, and trustees, will have the opportunity to listen, to ask questions, and to provide feedback during these interviews.
The Search Committee will then select a candidate to recommend as our next Long-Term Head of School to the Board of Trustees. The new Long-Term Head is expected to begin their role at MCS on or about July 1, 2027.

The Head of School is the only employee hired by and reporting directly to the Board of Trustees, making this one of the Board's most important responsibilities. The full Board retains final authority to select and appoint the new Head of School, approve compensation and employment terms, and authorize any offer of employment.
The Head of School Search Committee, made up of members of the Board of Trustees, is partnering with Educators Collaborative on the search process. In keeping with MCS's values, the Committee is committed to ensuring that the process is thorough, fair, and inclusive. The Search Committee will review candidates, conduct interviews with semifinalists and finalists, coordinate opportunities for the community to meet finalist candidates, and ultimately make a recommendation to the full Board of Trustees, which will make the final appointment.
Educators Collaborative is a nationally recognized search consulting firm specializing in independent and Montessori school searches. The consultants serve as expert advisors throughout the process — partnering with the Search Committee to understand our school’s needs and create a job posting, recruit and vet candidates, support interviews and reference checks, and ensure a smooth transition once a new Head of School has been selected. Mary Seppala was engaged to lead this search based on her extensive experience with Montessori schools specifically.
Community input has been central to this process from the beginning. In February, all community members were invited to complete confidential surveys administered by Educators Collaborative about both our short-term and long-term needs in a Head of School. In March, Mary Seppala visited campus to conduct listening sessions with faculty, staff, families, and trustees. That input directly informed the development of the Leadership Profile used to recruit candidates and the interview questions that will be used to narrow the field of semi-finalists.
As the search moves into its final stages, there will be several opportunities for community members — including families, faculty, staff, and students — to meet with finalist candidates during campus visits. We encourage community members to participate in as many of these as possible and to share your feedback with the Search Committee. More details about these sessions will be shared in advance of each visit.
The Stakeholder Advisory Group is made up of faculty and staff volunteers who provide input and feedback to the Search Committee during the finalist stage of the process. Members will have additional opportunities to meet with candidates and share their perspectives with the Search Committee. More details about the group's composition and role will be shared shortly.
The search is broad in scope and open to candidates from across the country and beyond. All candidates currently in the pool are external to MCS. Confidentiality about individual candidates is a critical component of a successful search — some candidates may not want it known at their current institution that they are exploring other opportunities — and the Search Committee will not comment on individuals participating or not participating in the search.
Candidates are evaluated based on how well their skills, experience, and leadership qualities match those outlined in the Leadership Profile, which was shaped by input from the MCS community. The Search Committee will go through multiple steps to evaluate the pool before narrowing it to a small group of finalists who will visit campus.
Information sessions and candidate interviews will be scheduled thoughtfully, with care to minimize disruption to the school day and academic calendar. Our faculty and staff remain fully committed to MCS's mission and to providing students with an excellent experience throughout the transition.
